The Witcher Season 2 Sneak Peak

Netflix’s The Witcher season 2 has a monster-filled new trailer just in time for Halloween. The new trailer was released on Friday and shows off just a few of the new foes (and possible allies) Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer will be up against this season. Season 2 introduces us to some new cast as well, with Graham McTavish as Dijkstra, Kim Bodnia as Vesemir Adjoa Andoh as Nenneke, Cassie Clare as Phillipa Eilhart and Kristofer Hivju as Nivellen just to name a few. The season will be less disjointed than Season 1, with a more chronological approach to its storytelling, which should please some fans. I admit, I enjoyed the timeline shenanigans in Season 1, but it wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea.

Sex, romance, adventure, terrifying monsters including a menacing Evil Groot and a whole bunch of cool new locations and rivalries. What’s not to love? In fact, there are enough monsters and fights in this trailer that if you’re already pretty sure you’re going to watch The Witcher season 2 you may actually want to skip it. Seeing Geralt take on half-dozen new types of foes is exciting, but it might be better suited to the surprise of the show than this sizzle reel  which is literally set to the Jay-Z verse in Kanye West’s “Monster.” There’s more than just monster-fighting in this new season 2 preview, though.

It also gives us a peak at where Yennefer is after the events of season 1. More importantly, the trailer reminds us that Geralt is training Ciri back at Kaer Morhen, and that she may not only be powerful enough to be a Witcher, but more powerful than anyone can guess. The trailer even includes a reunion between Geralt and Jaskier, but there are no hints about whether or not the second season will include a banger like “Toss a Coin to your Witcher.” The Witcher season 2 will debut on Netflix on Dec. 17.

The Souvenir Part II Review And Release Date

Drama
Directed By: Joanna Hogg
In Theaters: Oct 29, 2021

There couldn’t have been a film less suited to this writer’s tastes than The Souvenir, Joanna Hogg’s semi-autobiographical 2019 drama about an aspiring filmmaker’s ill-fated romance with a drug addict. It was widely heralded as one of the best films of its year, although it proved hard to engage with due to its exploration of class or rather, lack thereof. This was a human tragedy caught within an elitist bubble, the sly satire about upper-class privileges some detected not registering to my eyes. A sequel seemed unnecessary. In actuality, it has turned out to be the former film’s saving grace (at least, for those vocal few left cold by the first part), a vital work recontextualising everything that came before it. If the first film often felt detached from its core relationship, The Souvenir: Part II is haunted by its fallout; less a film about grief following a romance depicted at arm’s length, and more an examination of how artists use their work to dissect and rewrite real life to suit their narrative. It’s a deeply metatextual film by design, with Julie (Honor Swinton-Byrne) creating an avant-garde film, also titled The Souvenir, that charts her turbulent relationship with an older man (played in the prior film by Tom Burke). And although we see the fruits of her labour, it’s the process of making this personal work, a graduation project calmly dismissed by her university professors, that are integral to the film the struggle to make sense of the man who inspired the production, and offers a clear articulation about his character to those involved with it.

It’s a film that, whether by design or otherwise, counters any criticism of its predecessor, to the extent that it’s a surprise many treated that as a complete work while unaware of the ways this compliments it. This is partially through jokes at the prior film’s expense. There, Julie was repeatedly seen asking her mother (Tilda Swinton, who again returns here) to borrow money, with the unspoken suggestion that it was eventually funding Anthony’s addiction, although the examination of the relationship between wealth and addiction was frustratingly unexplored. Here, the sole instance of Julie asking her mother for money is played as a broad gag, an acknowledgement of the unspoken privilege so inherent in the story. Privilege is not a prominent theme here, but is addressed to some extent in how Julie has developed as a filmmaker; no longer aiming to make a social realist work in Sunderland and depict a world she was divorced from, opting for a project so personal even she can’t thoroughly dissect the wreckage left in its wake. But The Souvenir: Part II isn’t a film specifically about privilege, nor should it be. Hogg’s sequel is one of the strongest recent works about the very act of filmmaking, and the ramifications of using art as a form of therapy. Julie is directing a story that still remains largely alien to her, the mystery of Anthony’s identity (his claims to work at the Foreign Office still unverified) ensuring that grief isn’t a straightforward process for her to work through. Her insistence on making the project frustrates already condescending professors, who can’t fathom what she’s trying to address with “these images”, in addition to the cast and crew on the production itself. The film’s overarching thesis in these moments seems to be that trauma can only be directly addressed with time and that three decades of dealing with many of the vivid memories which inspired the films is necessary to properly address them. As with all the great films about filmmaking, this self-reflection is coupled with a healthy order of industry satire. Richard Ayoade’s pretentious auteur Patrick is given more screen time here, his big budget musical project and clarity of vision frequently shown in contrast with Julie he’s ridiculous, but revered for staying true to his vision, while she’s belittled for the experimental methods in which she attempts to tell a personal story. Hogg has spoken about the sexism she routinely faced at film school and in her career, but it’s the indirect ways this factors into the narrative where it feels most incisive on the subject. Hogg’s Souvenir sequel is her strongest work to date, a culmination of the rich themes that bubbled too far under the surface of its predecessor. If you too were left cold by that film, you won’t regret giving this one a chance.

Back 4 Blood Gameplay And Reviews

Back 4 Blood is a thrilling cooperative first-person shooter from the creators of the critically acclaimed Left 4 Dead franchise. Back 4 Blood recaptures the tempo of 2009, where I'm lining up headshots by the dozen while I shoot the shit with friends. Turtle Rock has faithfully resurrected the fun, heart-pumping zombie slaying that others have only attempted. Just making an unambitious Left 4 Dead 3 would've been enough for me, but Back 4 Blood is also a deck builder, a looter, a hero shooter, and even a bit of a roguelite. It's a game that Turtle Rock couldn't have made 10 years ago, and it's the addition of these smart, modern ideas that make it great. Right from the jump, Back 4 Blood flips the premise of Left 4 Dead on its head. You're no longer average-joe survivors scrambling to escape crumbling cities. You're zombie-killing mercenaries who hunt down infestations, rescue trapped civilians, and gather supplies for surviving settlements. Each bundle of levels begins with your party leaving the safety of the Fort Hope hub world to go look for trouble. It's kinda like skipping straight to later seasons of The Walking Dead in which everyone still alive is a superhuman murder machine. This describes Back 4 Blood's Cleaners, eight tough characters with unique stat bonuses for themselves and the entire team.

These aren't Overwatch heroes with splashy ultimate abilities, but the Cleaners do invite interesting, slightly different playstyles Holly is a melee specialist who earns stamina back on each kill, Hoffman carries an extra grenade and gives the whole team more ammo, and Mom gets a free revive once per mission. As I mentioned in my initial impressions, I've enjoyed maining Doc for most of my runs. Not only can she use medkits faster and heal everyone for free, but she also starts with the M9 pistol and MP5, two of my favorite guns. Picking a survivor in Left 4 Dead is mostly about whose voice quips you'd like to hear. Back 4 Blood's Cleaners quickly won me over, not because they have a ton of personality, but because it's fun to play a specific role in this sort of game. Even more depth emerged once I started combining Cleaner abilities with the game's other standout mechanicdeckbuilding. Back 4 Blood's main campaign is a pretty long stretch of around 30 levels. There are a few stinkers, particularly the briefer finale missions that end each Act, but the majority go big on Left 4 Dead's linear level design. City streets and spooky forests are denser and there are more avenues to break off and explore. Scavenging for an extra minute before leaving an area often rewarded us with extra Copper, ammo caches, or better guns. But we couldn't meander forever many missions have an on-screen timer warning when the next horde will arrive. The diversity of Back 4 Blood's missions feels like a direct response to the common Left 4 Dead criticism that it wasn't long enough. The card system gives the maps slightly different looks with Corruption Cards that modify the world and zombie behavior. One run may be foggy, or have armored zombies, or zombies with exploding heads, or more security doors that trigger alarms. I'm a big fan of these random mutators, though these exploding head zombies keep cramping my melee playstyle. The further you progress in the campaign, the meaner they get. By Act 3, the AI director was throwing sprinting zombies at us that deal double damage and leave acid behind. Uncool. I've spent most of my time so far on the lowest, default Recruit difficulty usually playing with at least one friend. The first two acts were pretty breezy and fun the perfect amount of challenge for when you just wanna turn your brain off and de-brain some Ridden. Playing the Ridden is a lot more fun, because of the whole 'being wildly overpowered' thing, but the arenas are so small that it's hard to ever catch a breath and plan your next move. You're better off running straight into a cluster of Cleaners at the same time as your teammates and hoping for the best. It's good for a few laughs, but not much else. Swarm sits in stark contrast to the thrill of limping half-dead into a safe room just as a Hunter is leaping at your face. Left 4 Dead leveraged the strength of its campaigns in Versus, and it's a wonder why Back 4 Blood hasn't done the same. Thankfully, Back 4 Blood is a big game and Swarm isn't its heart and soul, but if PvP was the main appeal of Left 4 Dead for you, Swarm will just ruin your day. It speaks to how strong of a game Back 4 Blood is that one of its modes can suck so hard that it barely detracts from my overall fun. Back 4 Blood is its co-op campaign, and it's best played with friends. That's how I'd recommend you play it as well if you're able (it's on Game Pass and has crossplay, if that helps). It's definitely not the same with randos and bots, but the ping system does help bridge the communication gap if mics aren't plugged in. I'm lucky to have played Back 4 Blood the way it's meant to be, because it's some of the best co-op fun I've ever had in a videogame. And while it's a bummer that Back 4 Blood likely won't have the same mod support that spawned incredible player-made content in Left 4 Dead 2 (it is a live service game in 2021, after all), I'm excited to see what's ahead on Turtle Rock's annual pass. Apparently there's a new story, Cleaners, and special Ridden types on the way. Count me in.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission Review

The world of My Hero Academia remains the most enticing and accessible in all anime. My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission, the latest film, proves it with a perfect outing that will delight fans and newcomers. My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission is the third movie in the popular Anime franchise and it is something fans are sure to love. While touching on important lessons and themes relevant to today, this film is absolutely inspiring, as Deku often is. Of course there is a lot of action too, and some great fights and use of quirks. It is always fun when My Hero Academia adds in new characters, and the introduction of Rody to this world is done so perfectly. Not only is he an important part of the story, his relationship with Deku, and what he learns from him, is truly inspiring. There are a lot of fantastic quotes in this movie that will likely stick with viewers for a long time. This movie does a great job of tying together an emotional and captivating plot, new characters, and of course, epic fight scenes with some of the best quirk usage. Those who are diehard fans of My Hero Academia need to see this one on the big screen! Flect Turn is a new character introduced in this film and he is the head of a cultish terrorist group of people who feel those with quirks are evil.

They do not want the genes passed down through generations and are willing to do anything they can to stop it form happening. Deku is one of the students tasked with trying to stop them, or at least figure out more of what they are up to, when he meets Rody Soul. The two end up bonding quite a bit while on the road together. It is easy for the audience to fall in love with Rody, even if he doesn’t always do the right thing. Of course, many fan favorites show up in this movie as well. Deku is always inspiring, brave, and giving it his all. That is exactly how he is in this movie too inspiring everyone around him to just be better and do better. Deku is the main focus along with his adventures with Rody, but Katsuki Bakugo and Shoto Todoroki have a lot of standout moments as well. Even though there just is not the time to give attention to the others, most of them do have their moments to shine, if only for a minute. The biggest main takeaway from this movie is about judging others just because they are different than you. Unfortunately this is a theme that is relevant in the real world right now, and always has been. The film uses words like pure when talking about those who do not have quirks very reminiscent of how Muggles are spoken about in Harry Potter. One of the very first lines of the film is that 80% of the population is sick with quirks sick with them. This, and the fact that the terrorists are out to kill only those with quirks, is disheartening. The worst part about it is that this is very much the world we live in today. Leave it to an anime to point that out to us. There are a lot of lessons to be learned here about forgiveness, getting to know people before you judge them, and perseverance. My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission spend a lot of time with the emotional and inspiring story, but it doesn’t shy away from the action. There are plenty of times that viewers get to see large scale fights and quirks in action. There are massive battles sprinkled throughout the movie, and of course a big epic one at the end. Because of the way they are spread throughout the movie does not have time to drag. There needs to be character development for the new ones, of course, but this is something My Hero Academia has mastered. Exploring Rody helps to move the plot along. That coupled with all the action makes this movie fly by. My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission has lessons and themes that are relevant to today. It takes well known and well loved characters and puts them at the front of the movie, while adding in a few new ones that will steal your heart. In true My Hero Academia fashion, there is a ton of action as well. Fans of the series will be thrilled with this movie. While it can certainly be a standalone film, those who know the characters from the show will appreciate it more.

Sony Releases First Official Uncharted Movie Trailer

Sony Pictures Entertainment and PlayStation have released the first official trailer for their upcoming Uncharted movie. It features all the action and quips you'd expect (although we could use a little more mustache). In the trailer below, we see what appears to be Tom Holland's Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg's Victor "Sully" Sullivan meeting for the first time in a bar.

The banter between that fans of the game franchise know and love makes an appearance immediately, with the two leads quipping about each's respective age and appearance. The trailer focuses on how locations and treasures become lost to time as well as Drake's inherent need to find said lost places/buried treasures ... and so the escapades begin. The movie doesn't appear to be directly following any single Uncharted game, but rather, it seems to be lifting elements from multiple. For example, Drake discovers two ships (that look pretty pirate-y) in a water-filled cavern reminiscent of the final act of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Then, we see Sophia Taylor Ali's Chloe Frazer, who becomes one of Drake's romantic interests in the games. Chloe doesn't appear in the series until Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, so the movie is taking some inspiration from that first sequel.

The back half of the trailer features a recreation of the iconic desert plane sequence in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. Just like in the game, we see Drake hanging on for dear life to cargo attached to a plane flying high above a massive desert. Elsewhere in the trailer, we hear mentions of Drake's brother, Samuel Drake, who seems to be already "lost" in the movie's universe, as we hear Drake mention that his brother Sam left him one last clue. We also see and hear Antonio Banderas' as-of-yet-unannounced antagonist too. To celebrate the trailer's release, Neil Druckmann, the co-president of Naughty Dog, the studio behind the Uncharted series, penned a letter to fans. "Today, we're humbly and incredibly excited to show you the world premiere of the first official trailer for the much-anticipated Uncharted movie – starring Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, and Antonio Banderas," Druckmann writes. "In a collaboration between Sony Pictures Entertainment, PlayStation Productions, and Naughty Dog, we captured the spirit, spectacle, and heart that Uncharted is known for (and some of you will recognize some of the humor, landmarks, music, and relics)." Druckmann said that in discussions with Uncharted's director, Ruber Fleischer shared that he "made the movie for both hardcore fans of the game and those who are not yet familiar with the franchise and believe that both will be equally entertained by this incredibly fun and action-packed film." Uncharted will release exclusively in theaters on February 18, 2022.

Due to his experience as a hero, Toshinori places the lives of others above his own and considers protecting others his responsibility. All Might has extraordinary speed and strength, though he can only manifest these strengths for a limited time. As the symbol of peace and the strongest hero in the world, All Might can not only defeat an enemy with a single punch but change the weather. He lost his hero abilities shortly after his final fight with All For One, but he still retained his sharp reflexes and keen intuition.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits Review

With its Pixar-like characters and beyond stunning animation, Kena: Bridge of Spirits is as charming as it is dark with plenty of surprises that will not only keep players enthralled for hours but also captivate their hearts. Ember Labs might not be, as yet, a studio many people would recognise in association with video games since much of their endeavours have been in animated commercials and short films like Terrible Fate, based on The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask but please, don’t let that fool you. Announced in 2020, Kena: Bridge of Spirits flew onto our radars with its cute and adorable gameplay featuring Kena and her little rot friends and thus catapulted Ember Labs’ popularity within the industry with many already marking Kena down as their most anticipated game of the year.
Of course, with this being the studio’s very first game, reservations are naturally justified but what many aren’t prepared for is how this relatively unknown indie team has taken an idea and not only wrapped it up in the most visually appealing animations I have seen outside of a Pixar movie but they’ve also included a deeply interesting and moving narrative set within a world that’s simply dripping in interactive beauty. Note: I’ve tried my best to keep this review as story spoiler-free as possible, however, themes and characters are briefly discussed. You play as Kena, a young spirit guide who takes on the role of helping stuck spirits cross over and find peace and in the process, uncover the mysterious story surrounding the demise of a village. Players won’t have to wait long into the gameplay before they meet the friendly yet shy but too cute for words Rot, who can be found hidden in different parts of the environment. With the help of Kena’s staff, she’s able to coax them out where they will play a vital part in her journey to reach Taro, a wise elder who fell to a mysterious plague that afflicts the land.
These little furry creatures who follow Kena everywhere can sniff out collectables, gems so you can buy items and cute hats for your rot, hidden items, help with puzzles and even have your back when it comes to fighting enemies although many will run and hide until it’s safe. Once your Courage meter is stacked up from yellow orbs dropped from defeated enemies, the Rot can be directed to kick some corrupted spirit butt. The UI is simple and easy to use without a mess of fiddly controls and combos to get used to. All the key ingredients that you’d expect are implemented – an upgrade tab where you can level up Kena’s abilities and the rot, a map of the land that includes where to go and important landmarks and also a tab for your found spirit items. When facing off against the game’s pesky corrupted spirits who woke up and chose violence, Kena has an arsenal of effective tricks to wipe them out that includes straightforward melee attacks, her spirit bow, spirit bomb and spirit dash although many of these are obtained as you level Kena up throughout the game. Kena also has a powerful blue bubble shield that acts as a defence and she’s also able to dodge oncoming attacks as well as using the shield to parry, providing a few seconds of slow-mo sequences.
For this playthrough, I chose to play ‘Story Mode’ which meant that enemies weren’t as tricky to kill but let me tell you, just because you choose this difficulty doesn’t mean that Ember Lab will go easy on you. From what I’ve seen, the devs like to cheekily test you and spice things up a little so you’re not too comfortable by adding in a boss fight that might take more time and skill than what you initially bargained for. As for the shrine puzzles, well, they are just a delight to solve unless you are like me who overthought almost all of them. I think I did this mostly because of how incredibly the game is made and how intricately it’s designed so, in turn, I imagined the puzzle element to follow through with the same concept. In reality, the in-game puzzles were straightforward. As long as you don’t overcomplicate them and really look at your surrounding environment, you’ll breeze through them all. The environmental storytelling is where Kena really comes to life and this is also where Ember Labs has hit a home run. One of the more difficult things for devs, I would imagine, is how to keep the player interested and engrossed as they make their way from A to B. Throughout my entire playthrough, I can honestly say that there wasn’t a moment of boredom or where I lacked curiosity. With so much to take in regarding the game’s breathtaking scenery, rich lighting design, weather dynamics, chests to open, puzzles and points of interest scattered around, the world felt truly alive at all times and an utter joy to explore. If you’re a fan of cliff scaling as seen in Uncharted or Tomb Raider, you’ll be pleased to know that Kena takes some of these well-known mechanics on whilst travelling across the map. Clinging and jumping across mountain edges was a lot of fun and what made it even better was having my little rot family spurring me on at every leap. As you find more fast travel places to warp to across the map, Kena finds a new way to traverse the treacherous terrain with the help of her staff that’s a brilliant feature but I’ll keep that a secret until you discover it for yourself.
One of the things I wasn’t prepared for in Kena: Bridge of Spirits is that even though it has bags of charm and oozing cute appeal, a really dark undercurrent flows fairly strongly throughout. As the game unfolds, you come across characters who need your help with their very own interwoven stories that are filled with grief, struggle and despair and that sees Kena explore the deeper and darker places of the map, its story and her very own narrative. Towards the end of Kena, the game took on a God of War type theme in where I was faced with pretty unnerving spirits in an all-out battle that incorporated flames and dramatic environmental elements that were reminiscent of the fiery pits of hell. For any studio, no mind an indie studio taking on a game for the first time, to incorporate so much into a game and to do it well is a huge accomplishment and Ember Lab has made it seem as though they have been doing it for years. The only issue I came across was a slight stuttering in one of the boss fights that lead to the game freezing but I was able to pick up again from where I left thanks to it autosaving just beforehand. Besides that, I really can’t recommend Kena: Bridge of Spirits highly enough that will see players partake in a meaningful journey absorbed in a vibrant world filled with fluid animations that cries out to be explored. With the game’s added photo mode, expect to add on a few more gameplay hours as you fill up your gallery with lots of cute Rot pictures, too.

Mob Psycho 100 Announces Season 3

With the recent announcement of Mob Psycho 100 season 3 exciting fans of the series, here are a few details about what to expect when the anime returns. The anticipation has been growing around a third and potentially final season of the show since season 2 came to an end in 2019, leaving part of the original manga unadapted. That anticipation was heightened when the official Mob Psycho 100 Twitter account began posting images counting up, one per day, in a similar style to the imagery used in the series to measure Mob's mental anguish and closeness to losing control. On October 19, 2021 the count hit 100% heralding the official announcement that season 3 had begun production.
Mob Psycho 100 is based on a manga by ONE, the creator of One Punch Man, and has the same mixture of offbeat humor and sincerity that made its predecessor a hit. It stars the shy but powerful psychic Mob as he tries to navigate a world full of dangerous spirits, psychic organizations, his con man boss Reigen, and the general struggles of teenage awkwardness. The series charmed many and resulted in a second and now third anime season being approved. Season 3 is being animated by BONES, the same studio as the first two, with all original cast and crew members returning. The final episodes of Mob Psycho 100 season 2 see Mob face off with Claw, an organization of powerful psychics dedicated to world conquest. When Toichiro targets Reigen, Mob is enraged and reaches 100% power. However, he ultimately regains control of faculties and stops Toichiro from destroying himself. Toichiro admits the error of his ways and allows himself to be arrested. The result of Mob's powers being unleashed have also resulted in the growth of a piece of broccoli into a giant tree, which will play a role in season 3. Many have hailed Mob Psycho 100 as a modern day classic, with season 2 helping to grow the series' reputation. Despite the continued popularity of Mob Psycho 100, it seems likely that season 3 will be the last in the series. So far, the anime has been a fairly faithful adaptation of the manga by ONE. That manga ended in 2017 with 101 chapters collected across 16 volumes. The first two seasons of Mob Psycho 100 anime have adapted 91 of those chapters, so season 3 will already be stretching existing material. The anime could theoretically continue with original plots, but such adaptations typically aren't well-received by fans, who usually want anime to stick closely to its source material. Time will tell, but Mob Psycho 100 season 3 will more than likely be the end of the anime series. As previously stated, the majority of the Mob Psycho 100 manga was already adapted in the first two seasons of the anime, but there are still a few loose ends to tie up before the series wraps. The one remaining major story arc in the Mob Psycho 100 manga is the Divine Tree arc, which sees confrontations between different groups of worshippers who all believe that the large tree Mob grew with his power is sacred. The manga ends with a few chapters dealing with Mob's personal life, including end-of-year exams and his attempts to confess his love to Tsubomi. With only 10 chapters remaining, it seems likely that there will also be some anime-original material and storylines. The anime industry is currently in a period of change especially where English-language streaming is concerned with services like Disney+, HBO Max and Netflix investing in the future of anime, and major streamers Crunchyroll and Funimation coming under the same ownership. The two previous seasons of Mob Psycho 100 aired week-to-week on Crunchyroll and Funimation in the west, with the dubbed version of season 1 also airing on Adult Swim, and a similar release is most likely for season 3. In the past, there has been a 3-6 month gap between the announcement of a season and its airing, so Mob Psycho 100 season 3 will most likely air as part of the spring or summer 2022 anime seasons, although no release date has been announced so far. Fans will eagerly be awaiting the conclusion to the story in Mob Psycho 100 season 3.

Facebook is Planning to Rebrand Itself

Facebook is planning to change its company name in coming days to reflect its focus on building the metaverse, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter. The coming name change, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to talk about at the company’s annual Connect conference on October 28th, but could unveil sooner, is meant to signal the tech giant’s ambition to be known for more than social media and all the ills that entail. The rebrand would likely position the blue Facebook app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more. A spokesperson for Facebook declined to comment for this story. Facebook already has more than 10,000 employees building consumer hardware like AR glasses that Zuckerberg believes will eventually be as ubiquitous as smartphones. In July, he told The Verge that, over the next several years, “we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.” A rebrand could also serve to further separate the futuristic work Zuckerberg is focused on from the intense scrutiny Facebook is currently under for the way its social platform operates today. A former employee turned whistleblower, Frances Haugen, recently leaked a trove of damning internal documents to The Wall Street Journal and testified about them before Congress. Antitrust regulators in the US and elsewhere are trying to break the company up, and public trust in how Facebook does business is falling.
Facebook isn’t the first well-known tech company to change its company name as its ambitions expand. In 2015, Google reorganized entirely under a holding company called Alphabet, partly to signal that it was no longer just a search engine, but a sprawling conglomerate with companies making driverless cars and health tech. And Snapchat rebranded to Snap Inc. in 2016, the same year it started calling itself a “camera company” and debuted its first pair of Spectacles camera glasses. I’m told that the new Facebook company name is a closely-guarded secret within its walls and not known widely, even among its full senior leadership. A possible name could have something to do with Horizon, the name of the still-unreleased VR version of Facebook-meets-Roblox that the company has been developing for the past few years. The name of that app was recently tweaked to Horizon Worlds shortly after Facebook demoed a version for workplace collaboration called Horizon Workrooms. Aside from Zuckerberg’s comments, Facebook has been steadily laying the groundwork for a greater focus on the next generation of technology. This past summer it set up a dedicated metaverse team. More recently, it announced that the head of AR and VR, Andrew Bosworth, will be promoted to chief technology officer. And just a couple of days ago Facebook announced plans to hire 10,000 more employees to work on the metaverse in Europe. The metaverse is “going to be a big focus, and I think that this is just going to be a big part of the next chapter for the way that the internet evolves after the mobile internet,” Zuckerberg told The Verge’s Casey Newton this summer. “And I think it’s going to be the next big chapter for our company too, really doubling down in this area.” Complicating matters is that, while Facebook has been heavily promoting the idea of the metaverse in recent weeks, it’s still not a concept that’s widely understood. The term was coined originally by sci-fi novelist Neal Stephenson to describe a virtual world people escape to from a dystopian, real world. Now it’s being adopted by one of the world’s largest and most controversial companies — and it’ll have to explain why its own virtual world is worth diving into.

It will also let you get a head-start in the game’s progression system. If you have the Digital Deluxe Edition, then you can already start downloading the game now.

From what we’ve seen in the trailer, the game looks amazing. It’s nothing ground-breaking, but this doesn’t look like your cookie-cutter obligatory video game made off the popularity of an anime series. It does look like it’s well-polished, and the gameplay doesn’t look too shabby either. The game’s story will follow the story of the anime and will have you battle the same demons protagonist Tanjiro Kamado fought in the show. If you’ve watched the Demon Slayer Mugen Train film from last year, then you pretty much already know what you’re getting here, story-wise.

In terms of features, the trailer doesn’t give out too much information. The Demon Slayer Deluxe Edition package refers to character unlock keys – suggesting that you can play characters other than Tanjiro. The more recent trailers showcase the game’s VS gameplay, showing off the other characters that you can play as.

Steam Bans Blockchain Games And NFTs

Steam's point of view is that items have value and they don't allow items that can have real-world value on their platform. While I respect their choice, I fundamentally believe that NFTs and blockchain games are the future. It's why I started this journey with all of you. Games that use blockchain technology or let users exchange NFTs or cryptocurrencies won’t be allowed on Steam, according to a rule added to Valve’s “What you shouldn’t publish on Steam” list. The change was pointed out by SpacePirate, a developer working on an NFT-based game, who said that the change was because the company doesn’t allow game items that could have real-world value. But Steam could also be avoiding controversy with the move. Steam is one of the most well-known PC game stores, but it’s not the only one.

While Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney has said that the company isn’t interested in touching NFTs, that policy doesn’t seem to apply to games in its store: Epic told The Verge that it’s “open” to the idea of games that use NFTs or cryptocurrencies in an email on Friday. Looking at a Wayback Machine capture of Steam’s rule page from late August, there are only 12 rules and no mention of cryptocurrencies or NFTs. The new rule is also missing from other documents  it currently doesn’t show up on the Joining the Steamworks Distribution Program page. Steam has a history of making controversial moderation decisions, especially when it comes to games with sexual content.

In this case, though, it doesn’t seem like people are pressing F to pay respects to NFT games a majority of the replies and quote tweets to SpacePirate’s tweets are praising Valve for the move (or mocking those that are upset about it). Valve didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. It’s perhaps understandable why Steam would want to avoid having NFTs on its platform. Besides the justification cited by SpacePirate that they could have real-world value (which seems a bit weak, given the massive commercial communities around things like CS:GO skins and Team Fortress 2 hats), NFT and crypto-based games don’t have the best reputations. There’s the infamous Evolved Apes saga where a developer sold NFTs with the promise that they’d be included in a fighting game but then seemingly took the money and ran. There are some potentially interesting game concepts that use NFTs, but it’s hard to say how many of them would’ve been a good fit for Steam even if they were allowed.

DC’s new comic book Superman is for LGBTQ

DC’s newest Superman is coming out of the closet next month, with the comics company revealing that Jon Kent will be starting a relationship with Jay Nakamura, a new character introduced earlier this year. The son of the original Superman (Kal-El / Clark Kent), Jon took over for his father as the “official” Superman in DC’s mainline Superman: Son of Kal-El comic earlier this year as Earth’s most powerful superhero. (For those not caught up, Clark is still around, albeit off dealing with some drama on Warworld in the Action Comics and limited-run Superman and the Authority lines.) “I knew replacing Clark with another straight white savior could be a real opportunity missed,” writer Tom Taylor told IGN in an interview.

“But I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes. Today, Superman, the strongest superhero on the planet, is coming out.” Superman: Son of Kal-El also looks to offer a more modern take on the character. Jon Kent’s version of the hero will not only face off against the usual run of supervillains but also contemporary issues like climate change and school shootings. DC isn’t shying away from similarities to Clark Kent’s famous romances, either: like Lois Lane (Jon’s mother), Jay is also a reporter, although Taylor teased in the same IGN interview that he’ll have some superpowers of his own that will allow him to meet Superman on his level instead of serving as another person for Jon to save. Jon Kent joins other prominent LGBTQ members of DC’s comics pantheon, following the reveal that Tim Drake (one of several Robins in the Batman canon) was queer in an August issue earlier this year. Jon and Jay are set to “become romantically involved” in next month’s issue number five of Superman: Son of Kal-El, out on November 9th.
