It may be a situation where he has to sync his memories or something with the host. Like.... "I will possess this person, and be aware of everything I do while possessing, but I won't know what I've done until after I get back in touch with this said person". If gunko was frozen it means the connection was cut short, hence he felt the need to go in person to see what went wrong.
